It seems like we’ve been waiting forever for a Snapdragon-based Android phone, which would finally bring high-definition video to smartphones running Google’s operating system, but yesterday, Acer finally scratched that itch by confirming their upcoming Liquid phone. Now the details are beginning to juicily leak, and the phone looks good in specs and custom interface, if not in a rather cheap looking physical design.
The hardware is about what we expected: The Acer Liquid is, of course, running a 1GHz Snapdragon processor underclocked down to 768MHz. It sports a WVGA capacitive touchscreen measuring up to 3.5 inches. There’s also a five megapixel camera, 256MB of RAM, WiFi, 3G and a 1,350 mAH battery that should suck up a respectable charge and then regurgitate it slowly.
It’s the custom shell Acer has slapped on top of Liquid that really snines, though. Using a customized version of Android 1.6 Donut, the Acer Liquid has a more social networking centric contacts system, much like the Palm Pre or the HTC Sense. In addition to the contact management system, Acer has designed their own widgets, as well as a new dialer, a task managing app switcher, a new multimedia dashboard and a skinner applications drawer.
