Introduction:
Onda VX757+ is the upgrade of VX757. The only difference between two models is that VX757+ has TV-out function while the VX757 doesn’t. We have already done a full review for Onda VX757, read here. Here I would like to review its TV-out function.
TV-out Function:
VX757 comes with an av able. The av cable has three ends at one side and 3.5mm jack at the another. Connect your TV with the av cable according to the colors (red, yellow and white). Connect the 3.5mm end to the player. In the main menu of the player, select TV and make necessary settings, finally select ‘TV Screen’ (the player will be screen off). See the TV, it is showing now. I tested with a few rmvb movie clips downloaded from the internet. They display perfectly in my laptop. When they are played in the TV through the player, the quality is a little bit downgraded. Sit down and watch it from normal distance, the quality is just a bit poorer than normal TV shows.
Conclusion:
Onda VX757+ seems to be the best choice for TV-out if you are insisting a small pmp. It is light and convenient. I also notice that VX757+ has more languages support : Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, Japanese, Russian, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Polish and Italian.
The VX747 is the first touch screen interactive player to use the new JZ4732 chipset, like other similar players, this can play unconverted videos that are in a high resolution state at 30FPS. It can play a variety of audio and video file formats. The touch screen gives the user interface a slick feel, this is definitely a mark improvement from Onda VX858 and VX878. This model is available in 4GB and 8GB of internal memory.
Design:
The overall design looks like a smaller version of the iPod Touch, with chrome contours, the 3 buttons on the front are +(volume up), M (Menu) and -(volume down), these buttons are generally for increasing and decreasing volume, but they can also be used for the built-in games.
Screen:
The VX747 boast a 16:9, 3 inch screen, 262k colors QVGA (also called WQVGA), with a resolution of 400×240, a very good screen quality, easy to clean, and sensitive enough for you to use your fingers on it.
User Interface:
The interface is very simple. Three(3) buttons on the front, one(1) power on/off slide-button on the side, a small Reset-button hole just in case you need it(you can use the stylus pen or a paper clip), USB 5-pin standard Mini-USB, also standard 3.5mm headphone jack and a Micro SD/SDHC slot supporting 512MB to 32gb.
GUI(graphical interface):
The graphical interface is pretty straight forward. At the moment you turn on the player, after the intro animation, it displays the whole menu, very easy to learn. Some hidden customizations you can do are changing the background picture for different functions(music, radio, etc.). There are a few themes pre-installed in the player that you can choose
from.
Audio:
This player is compatible with MP3, WMA, WAV, APE and FLAC files. The audio quality may depend on how the music has been encoded, but it does support MP3 with CBR (Constant BitRate) and VBR (Variable BitRate). It has an equalizer with SRS WOW, BBE, Customizable EQ and & Preset EQ, so you can choose how to improve the sound as you wish. The simple audio spectrum shows only if the music doesn’t have a lyrics file, otherwise it displays the lyrics, synchronized with the music. This player also has a built-in speaker. The purpose of this, is if you want to show a video, or let friends listen to music, you only have to enable/disable it by touching the speaker icon on the top left of the screen. If the menu disappeared, touch the screen once to make it reappear. It doesn’t support playlists, but most of us don’t even use this option even on our own computers. You can make your own folders and put the music inside them, creating categories of music and playing only 1 folder, acting like a playlist. The playback time for audio is about 17 hours(with the screen off).
Video:
Video compatibility is impressive on this player. While the player supports RM/RMVB, AVI, FLV (Flash Video) files, DAT, ASF, MP4, WMV, 3GP, and MPG for those found on Youtube, but to read FLV files, you have to manually choose them, meaning that you have to choose Browser in the main menu, and go to your folder where your FLV files are, touch one and choose Play, otherwise the files won’t display if you go in Video. The player support files with a video bitrate up to around 750kb, higher than this might make the video lag since the processor inside does have a limit. But 700kb for a video bitrate is pretty good for a 3inch 16:9 screen! If you have any doubts that your videos might not work(H264 files, or strangely-encoded videos), you might want to check our forum about videos encoding and tools to re-encode your videos to work fine. The video playback time is about 6 hours. Hard to imagine that, but the JZ4740 requires far less power than other similar chipsets. Therefore requiring far less demand on the battery.
Photos:
This player is compatible with JPEGs, BMPs, GIFs and PNGs, it can handle any pictures size. You can also rotate the pictures and stretch them to fit the entire screen. In the Photos menu, it displays thumbnails, in 4×4 fashion, as previews for better photo navigation. You can also choose a picture to be used as a background for the functions of the player. ie: music, radio, recording, etc, by touching the star symbol between the speaker icon and the M icon.
Other Features:
-FM Radio
Radio reception mainly depends on the headphones you use, and also the weather I’m sure. Since the headphones are used as the antenna. So that would mean that you cannot listen to the radio with the built-in speaker. The Radio feature also supports up to 40 pre-selected stations, which can be modified in the TXT file via the computer (when connected to the USB cable). Also, you can record the radio station you listen to (with a Low, Medium or High quality option).
-Games
The VX747 comes with 3 games built-in: Tetris (called Erros in the menu), Brick and Snakes. Snakes is hard to play on a touch-screen(due to turns), but Brick and Tetris are playable with the 3 buttons at the bottom of the player.
-Voice Recording
You can also record your own voice with the built-in microphone. The recording quality is also good enough for anyone who may want to record outdoor or indoor, or on-the-go with the same Low, Medium or High recording quality as the FM Radio recording.
-Text Viewing
The player supports TXT files, it can come in very handy for lists, phone numbers, and other types of reminders.
Accessories included:
The Onda VX747 has headphones, the stylus pen, silicon protector, strap(for use on the silicone protector), a standard USB cable for transfering of files and recharging, the Onda warranty card, the drivers and tools CDROM and manual (in Chinese but can be found in English). The included headphones are of good sound quality. If you choose to want a USB wall charger, you can find it in the allPMP store.
Conclusion:
The VX747 is a great touch-screen player, for those of us who prefer a touch screen due to the easy navigation. This player is very inexpensive also. The fact this player boasts a 16:9 screen enables you to convert a whole Widescreen DVD movie and watch it, while having a larger-than-average screen(remember 3″ screen), and a 1000mAh built in rechargeable Li-On battery. If you are wanting to take care extra good care of your Onda, there are many styles of silicon covers you can get for it. My suggestion is a good inexpensive screen protector as it is a touch screen and you don’t want to ruin it. I myself have a microfleece cloth that I use on all my PMP’s as not to scratch the screens. You can use light chemicals to clean them, but NEVER use paper towels due the hazard of scratching.
Introduction:
Onda is back with a new player, the VX767, very similar to the previous VX757, but the main differences are the bigger 4.3inch 16:9 screen and features a TV-Out. This player is NOT touch-screen, some websites had erroneous informations about this. The build is very nice, the player feel solid in your hand.
Design:
The design of the VX767 is simple and low-profile, the buttons doesn’t stand out to be seen very clearly, but i think this is the goal for this player, so you’re not distracted by the buttons while you watch videos.
Screen:
The VX767’s screen is one of the biggest on the PMPs market right now, 4.3inch, 16:9 TFT screen, with a resolution of 480×272, even i was surprised at its size at the beginning! User Interface:
The main interface is quite low-profile, but very easy to understand without even checking the manual (which is only in Chinese…), you have the On/Off button (O) which also serve as a play/pause button while playing musics or videos and can be used as the "Enter" button. Also on the front is a single piece of plastic that have 2 sides you can push: M (for Menu, which you hold to come back to Main menu, or can also be used as the Enter button to select files) and an almost-closed circle icon which you use to come back in previous menus, or holding it if you’re listening to a video to return to your videos menu. On the side is the + and - button (used for volume and navigation), and the Next/Forward button (can also be used for navigation).
The GUI:
The Graphic User Interface is practically the same as on the VX757, with as a new feature added, a TV Out function. The 4 default backgrounds are very colorful, but you can change all backgrounds with pictures you can add on the player (in Picture folder). I’ve also found that the screen turn off even when connected on the USB cable on your computer! (the VX747’s screen doesn’t turn off when connected), which is a good thing when you just want to charge your player via your computer USB port and you don’t want the screen to be always on (it can be dangerous to let a screen on for a long period of time without anything moving on this screen).
Audio:
This player is compatible with MP3 (VBR or CBR), WMA, WAV, APE and FLAC files. It have equalizer options you can choose to improve the sound. An audio spectrum shows if the music doesn’t have a lyric file. This player doesn’t have a built-in speaker, but i’ve found this old feature on previous Onda models was a bit buggy (sometimes the speaker was on, sometimes not, i had to turn it off if the music was playing outloud in a crowded place such as a bus or on the street, can be embarrassing), so it’s a kind of relief it doesn’t have one.
Video:
Video compatibility is pretty good on this player, supporting RM/RMVB, ASF, AVI, WMV, MP4, MPG and FLV (Flash Video) files, found on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc… (to read FLV files, you have to choose “browser” in the main menu, and go to your folder where your FLV files are). The player support files with a video bitrate up to around 750kb, higher than this might make the video lag. I would suggest you to use videos from 650kbps to 750kbps of bitrate. One of the few good, free converters is ViDrop (a link can be found on AllPMP forum to download it).
Photos:
This player is compatible with JPEGs, GIFs, BMPs and PNGs, it can handle any pictures size, you can do rotations on them as well, and you can also use pictures as backgrounds in your player, to customize it as you wish (pressing M button while looking at a picture, a menu appear, you choose where you want to put this picture as background and you press M again).
Other Features:
-FM Radio
Radio reception mainly depend on the earphones/headphones you’re using, and also the weather i believe, since the earphones are used as the antennas. The Radio feature also support up to 40 pre-programmed stations, which are easy to create as bookmarks in the player (Update FM playlist), just make sure the radio region is set to your continent (China, Europe, USA, Japan). Also, you can record the radio station you’re listening to (with a Low, Medium and High quality option).
-Games
The VX767 come with 3 game built-in: Tetris (called Erros in the menu), Brick and Snakes. Those games are virtually unplayable, but you can try to find a good way to play on this player. Even if they are hard to play, those games are still there just in case you suffer from severe boredness.
-Voice Recording
You can record your own voice with the built-in microphone, the recording quality is good for anyone who want to record outdoor and indoor on-the-go, with Low, Medium and High recording quality as in the FM Radio.
-Text Viewing (E-book)
The player support TXT files, to use as memos and anything else you don’t want to forget. (i.e. phone numbers, email addresses, etc…).
-TV Out
This player feature a TV-Out which you can use to show pictures, videos, musics on a TV. This feature have 2 regions setting: N (for NTSC, 60Hz) and P (for PAL/Secam, 50Hz), so you can make it work on any TV in the world, as long as this TV have Composite (RCA standard) connectors (mono or stereo).
Accessories included:
Included in the box are the earphones, the standard 5-pins USB cable to transfer files and recharging, the stereo Composite TV-Out cable, a blue cleaning cloth (it will be VERY useful to get rid of fingerprints and dust on the screen, trust me!), the Onda warranty card and build date printed on the back, the drivers and tools cdrom and the manual (in Chinese). Also included is a card, which i assume is a prepaid card to download free stuff on the Muzgame.com website. A vital accessory not included is a wall charger. Also, this player have a power-supply connector on one side, used for using the player without having to wait for it to charge i believe). The connector used and voltage for this charger is unknown though…so use this at your own risk.
Conclusion:
The VX767 is a very good versatile player, with its 16:9 4.3inch screen, it almost feel like you’re holding a home theatre system in your hand! You just need a very good pair of earphones, some (converted) movies, and some popcorn!
Onda VX898 has more or less the same functions as VX818 and VX818FM. They support SRS, OGG and AEF. VX898 seems to have longer continuous playback, that is 30 hours. And its screen is quite stylish with black background and white words.
Introduction:
The Onda VX757 is believed to be built based on the popular VX747 with a few design modifications. The biggest adjustment of all is the change from touch screen to push-buttons. The next difference is the removal of the built-in speaker in VX757. All audio has to be listened through a headphone/speaker via the 3.5mm audio jack. Not surprisingly, VX757 also has a different look from its predecessor with a slightly smaller size (90mmx50mmx11mm) and weight (57g). Yet, inside this little black box, everything is just as powerful. VX757 is currently available in 4GB and 8GB of internal flash memory.
Design:
The overall design looks like a small deck of cards. All surfaces are smooth except the back where it is engraved with some wood grain pattern. Only the one button is located on the same side of the screen. The rest of the controls and ports are placed on the edges of the device. The entire unit is black in color. The combination gives a cool elegant look. It feels comfortable in hand and presents an impression of a solidly built device.
Screen:
VX757 inherits the 3” QVGA screen (262k colors, 16:9 aspect ratio, 400×240 resolution) from VX747. With the screen size of these MP4 players, you really need to have very good eyes to tell the difference between this QVGA and a LTPS screen.
User Interface:
You will find a total of six push-buttons on the VX757. They are labeled as the vol-, vol+, play/pause, rewind, fast-forward and mode buttons. Each button serves multiple functions depending on when and how they are used. You will not find a dedicated power switch for VX757. The play/pause button serves as that purpose. The mini-USB port, the 3.5mm audio jack and the reset-button hole are all placed on the right side of the unit. The micro SD/SDHC slot is located on the opposite edge of the controls. VX757 supports up to 32GB of SDHC cards.
The GUI:
The graphical interface is also very straight forward. In the menu mode, single press-and-release the vol-/+ buttons scroll the selection from one to the next. The play/pause or fast-forward buttons selects the highlighted choice or moveone level down from the current level. The mode or the rewind buttons exit the current application or move one level up from the current level. During video and music mode, a single press-and-release of the rewind/fast-forward button skip to the previous/next file, while press-and-hold the rewind/fast-forward button will just rewind/fast-forward the existing file. Press-and-hold the play/pause for more than five seconds will power down the device.
Audio:
This player is compatible with MP3, WMA, WAV, APE and FLAC files. It supports MP3 with CBR (Constant Bit Rate) and VBR (Variable Bit Rate). The sound qualityis wonderful. You can choose to play all songs or just one folder. You can organize the play order by filename, by title, by artist or by album. You can alsochoose to randomize the order if you wish. There are 7 built-in EQs available to choose from: Jaz, Pop, Rock, Classic, Vocal, Treble and Bass. This player also support LRC file which allows the synchronization of music with lyrics (currently, it only support lyrics in English and Simplified Chinese). Great feature if you are into karaoke.
Video:
Powered by the Chinachip JZ4732 as its main chip, video compatibility is known to be superb on this player. Just like its predecessor, VX757 supports RM/RMVB,ASF, AVI, MP4, 3GP, MPG and FLV files. The player support files with a video bit rate up to around 750kbps. The typical standard for portable media player is450kbps. With the support up to 750kbps, you should be able to watch yourfavorite fast-action/kung fu movie without missing the killer move. All JZ4732 powered players support playback resume, meaning you can pick up from where you left off without any fast-forwarding.
Photos:
VX757 supports JPEGs, BMPs, GIFs and PNGs. It can handle any picture size. You can rotate those pictures and stretch them to fit the whole screen. Since there is no need to reserve space for touch-screen controls, VX757 is left with more real estate to display thumbnails in a 6 x 4 fashion. You can display photos ina slideshow, and you can also customize the background picture for some applications in the player including music, radio, recording and text viewing(choosing background in text viewing is new in VX757).
Other Features:
-FM Radio
FM radio reception comes standard on VX757. You can listen to your favorite talk-show without buying add-on equipment (take that ipod). The headphones wire is used as the antenna. Reception is just as good as any other portable radio epending solely on the radio signal strength. You can store up to 40 pre-programmed stations and edit you list as you prefer. You can even record audio clips from radio with selectable quality.
-Games
VX757 also comes with 3 games built-in: Tetris, Brick and Snakes. With push-button control instead of touch-screen, VX757 is probably more game-friendly than its touch-screen counterparts.
-Voice Recording
Again, just as VX747, VX757 is built with an internal microphone for voice recording with selectable recording quality to choose from.
-Text Viewing
VX757 support TXT files for text viewing. As of firmware version 1.10, it supports English and Simplified Chinese for text viewing. It can read files with filenames in Traditional Chinese, but it does not seem to support text viewing in Traditional Chinese at this point.
Accessories:
The Onda VX757 comes with an earphones, a cleaning cloth, a carrying pouch, a standard 5-pin USB cable, the Onda warranty card, the drivers and tools CD andthe user manual (in Simplified Chinese). Though the earphones are Onda branded,it definitely lacks quality in terms of both sound and comfort. The VX757 is so easy to use that not having a manual in English is not a big deal. Most answer to your questions can be found at the AllPMP forum. Should you need accessory for your player, you can visit the AllPMP store
Conclusion:
If you like VX747, you should seriously consider the VX757. I own a VX747 and I can totally see why Onda comes out with this non-touch screen version. With VX747, I find it not always easy to selecta file at the top of the list with my fingertip. Without proceeding with caution, I tend to get the second file with my fat-finger (of course you canuse the stylus but such inconvenience). VX757 is also less prone to involuntary activating the screen while playing music, saving you power for longer playtime. Having push-button gives you better control for gaming and while driving (please, no gaming and driving at the same time). To me, not having a built-in speaker is not a loss since the quality of such a small speaker cannot be that great anyway. It would be nice if they replace the screen with LTPS but I will not lose sleep over it since this is just a 3” screen. How much detail do you really need? With the price tags slightly lower than VX747, I would definitely recommend the Onda VX757 to anyone shopping for a MP4 player.
Not long after ONDA dropped the widescreen VX747, it’s also introducing a tastier-looking successor, the VX757. This new PMP has a rather odd display configuration: 16:10 aspect ration. We know wide screen is 16:9, but what is 16:10? Obviously ONDA has some explaining why they are supporting the same aspect ratio as Apple Cinema HD, and we’d get you all the juicy details once it comes in. The details for now are as follows: 3.0-inch touch screen like the VX747, RM / RMVB/ APE / FLAC, support for 32GB SD card.
Design-wise, we love seeing the iPhone-like home button in lieu of the Meizu M8-like keys.
