Newsmy F5 introduces a new PMP that has a 4.3 inch screen, WQVGA 16-million colors, with 480×272 (resizing not required), 16:9 widescreen. TV-out option also included. Comes in models with either 2GB or 4GB internal memory and supports SDHC formats up to 32GB. Supported video formats are RM/RMVB and AVI (XviD/DivX). Audio formats supported are: MP3, WMA, FLAC, APE, also supports lyrics during play. Intelligent music documentation management function. Equalizer included has 6 presets: Normal, 3D, popular, classical, heavy bass, knight, PlayFX and can be user customized. FM Radio has automatic scan and manual, and you can save stations(presets). Comes with games pre-installed and supports multiple tasks at the same time. It also has image browsing, thumbnail browsing, and supports JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF. E-book reader supports TXT format and bookmarking. Built in microphone allows recording from the FM station as well as through the microphone. Automatic shut off feature helps save battery life. USB 2.0, 3.5 headphone jack. Has mini SD memory card slot which supports SDHC up to 32GB. Supports firmware upgrades.

On the Newsmy official web site, they are calling all the other newer players A3, A4, A6, so my assumption is that this one also will be called the A5 instead of the F5. I’m not too sure where iMP3 got their information but according to all the recent information by Newsmy, they are calling them A series not F.

Newsmy K8+ Review

Newsmy K8+

Introduction:
The Newsmy K8+ is a different version of the previous Newsmy K8, while it can look almost like a toy (probably because of the D-pad on the left), it also have a sport look. This version is available in 3 different sizes of memory: 2gb, 4gb and 8gb.

Design:
The design is pretty much like the previous K8, a sport-gaming look, black-colored, one more change is the name/function of the buttons are written on the player instead of ON the buttons. The fact there’s a D-pad on the player makes navigation around the menus very easy. The small Mini-SD door on the right also make sure the memory card inserted stays inside securely.

Screen:
The K8+ have a 2.4inch QVGA screen, 262k colors display, the backlight seem to be slightly better than on my previously reviewed player, the Onda VX747. The viewing angle is good for this type of screen.

Newsmy K8+

User Interface:
Ths navigation on this player is very easy since it have a D-pad, and also 4 buttons on the front (Menu, Play, EQ, A-B) the Menu button is to go back in your menus, the Play button act like the OK button and Play/Pause, the EQ button is to change equalizer preset while you listen to music (the presets in the music play menu are in Chinese though), the A-B button is a funny feature on this player, it’s to loop a song from the point A to point B, you can definite those points by pushing the button once during a song, and later pushing it again, and it will loop infinitely. The only use i can see for this feature is to find places in a song to make loops from this sample afterwards on a computer. The buttons are a bit small though, it might not be good for those with big fingers.

The GUI:
The graphical interface is the same as other Chinachip interfaces. Those who tried the Onda VX747 will know what i’m talking about. Fairly simple, straight-forward interface, The themes included (4 of them) are better than on the previous player i reviewed. You can also set the backlight intensity and fonts color. There are 3 languages included (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and English).

Audio:
This player is compatible with MP3, WAV, WMA, FLAC and APE audio files. Audio files also support lyrics (.LRC files), they need to be named the same as the target audio file though (example: audio1.mp3, audio1.lrc ). There’s a built-in speaker to listen to audio and videos without the need of earphones/headphones, the sound quality is pretty good. Equalizer presets (8) are also available, but the Normal preset is often the best for most audio files.

Video:
Video is very good on this player and screen, the Realvideo files seem to be better, lagging less than on other players i’ve seen. The Newsmy K8+ player support AVI, RM RMVB, DAT, 3GP, MPG, MP4 formats, it also support FLV (Flash Video) files, those are found on Youtube, Dailymotion and websites similar to this. This player support files with a video bitrate up to around 750kb, higher than this might make the video lag since the processor inside do have a limit. It also support SWF (ShockWave Flash) files, compatible with files made with Flash 7 or lower. For a good video converter, i would suggest ViDrop, it’s free and very good to convert anything to anything with the bitrate and size you want.

Photos:
This player is compatible with BMP, GIF, JPEG and PNG picture formats, the standard in any new players around. The Thumbnails displays in 5 x 4 fashion as previews for a better pictures navigation. You can also take a picture to become a background for one of the functions of the player (main interface, music, e-book, recording) by pressing the Play button while viewing a picture.

Newsmy K8+

Other Features:

-Games
The Newsmy K8+ come with 4 game built-in: Tetris (called Erros in the menu), Brick, Snakes and Candy House. Snakes and Candy House are the best built-in games on this player, but for Brick and Tetris, the problem is you have to hold the player vertically with the D-pad up, and it can be hard to control like this.

-Voice Recording
You can also record your own voice with the built-in microphone, the recording quality is also good enough for anyone who want to record outdoor and indoor on-the-go, with the same Low, Medium and High recording quality as in the FM Radio recording.

-Text Viewing/E-book
This player support TXT file format, very handy for phone numbers, reminders, etc…

-Expansion memory slot
This player take Mini-SD cards up to 2gb (you can also use a Micro SD card with a Mini-SD adapter)

Newsmy K8+

Accessories :
The accessories included in the box of this player are a carrying case, earphones with foam tips and a standard 5-pins USB cable. Other items included are the manual (quick setup guide), ads, small card with the manufacturing date, and another manual which i think is a troubleshooting manual.

Conclusion:
If you’re looking for a simple PMP for videos, musics with a good screen and easy navigation around, without spending too much, this player will do the job right! I would recommend to grab a USB wall charger at the same time from the allPMP store (not all PMPs include this accessory)
